Quantitative determination of uncertainties in seismic refraction prospecting

چکیده
We present a model of the propagation of refracted seismic waves in planar (horizontal or dipping) layered structures in which we quantify the errors from various sources. The model, called the (mixed) variance component model, separates the errors originating on the surface from those due to inhomogeneities of subsurface layers. The model starts with the assumption of homogeneous (constant-velocity) layers, but by taking the principal errors into account, variations from this model (including degree of velocity inhomogeneity, vertical velocity gradients, and gradational interfaces) can be identified. A complete solution to the variance component model by Bayesian methods relies on the Gibbs sampler, a recently well-developed statistical technique. Using the Gibbs sampler and Monte Carlo methods, we can estimate the posterior distributions of any parameter of interest. Thus, in addition to estimating the various errors, we can obtain the velocity-versus-

Joint inversion of ReMi dispersion curves and refraction travel times using particle swarm optimization algorithm
Shear-wave velocity ( ) is an important parameter used for site characterization in geotechnical engineering. However, dispersion curve inversion is challenging for most inversion methods due to its high non-linearity and mix-determined trait. In order to overcome these problems, in this study, a joint inversion strategy is proposed based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The ...
متن کاملRelationship between head wave amplitudes and seismic refraction velocities to detect lateral variation in the refractor
Refractor ambiguities are big problem in seismic refraction method especially in seismic engineering. There can be hidden subsurface geological phenomena such as hidden faults and shear zones which are not simply predicted by the travel-time graph or some geophysical methods. Head wave amplitudes are used to show the resolution of refractor ambiguities and the existence of anisotropy in complex...
متن کاملQuantitative Examination of Piezoelectric/Seismoelectric Anomalies from Near-Surface Targets
The piezoelectric and seismo-electrokinetic phenomena are manifested by electrical and electromagnetic processes that occur in rocks under the influence of elastic oscillations triggered by shots or mechanical impacts. Differences in piezoelectric properties between the studied targets and host media determine the possibilities of the piezoelectric/seismoelectric method application. Over a long...
متن کاملPERFORMANCE BASED DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF STEEL MOMENT RESISTING FRAMES INCORPORATING SEISMIC DEMAND AND CONNECTION PARAMETERS UNCERTAINTIES
One of the most important problems discussed recently in structural engineering is the structural reliability analysis considering uncertainties. To have an efficient optimization process for designing a safe structure, firstly it is required to study the effects of uncertainties on the seismic performance of structure and then incorporate these effects on the optimization process. In this stud...
متن کاملRecent 2017-2018 Seismicity and News Seismic Hazard Zoning of Iran
On November 12, 2017, at 18:18 UTC, a major earthquake with moment magnitude Mw7.3 struck the Kermanshah province of Iran, causing extended damage and casualties. Thus, we explore seismicity preceding this earthquake, with the aim to understand whether the information from past events could provide some insights about the occurrence of this and other future large earthquakes. Taking into accou...
